Aim of the project

Aim of the project

The primary goal of the project is to analyze and better understand the current dynamics of forest growth in response to changing climatic and environmental conditions. The research introduces a new approach based on near-real-time monitoring using advanced technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT) and remote sensing (RS). The study focuses on two key coniferous species in Central Europe—Scots pine and Norway spruce—and will be conducted in Poland and the Czech Republic.

To overcome the limitations of previous methods, the project integrates high-resolution satellite data, IoT-based monitoring systems, and tree-ring width data (TRW). This allows for continuous tracking of growth dynamics at both tree and stand levels. The project also aims to develop predictive models for future forest growth under different climate scenarios, helping to assess forest resilience, carbon sequestration potential, and risks related to forest mortality.

By combining long-term datasets with high-frequency field measurements, the project addresses several key research questions, such as the influence of weather on tree growth during the growing season, the impact of drought on different stand structures, and the ability to upscale IoT data using RS products. Ultimately, the project will deliver an integrated monitoring system capable of functioning as an early warning tool for forest health and growth changes, contributing to precision forestry and broader environmental awareness.
