Project Concept and Work Plan

The project proposes a comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach to understanding forest growth dynamics under changing climate and environmental conditions. By combining Internet of Things (IoT) technology with remote sensing (RS), the research will provide high temporal and spatial resolution data for analyzing forest ecosystems. The key concept is to monitor tree growth in near-real-time using a dense IoT sensor network (IoTreesNet) and upscale the findings using satellite and airborne data to the regional level.

The study will be carried out by two experienced research teams: the University of Agriculture in Krakow (UAK) and the Czech Academy of Sciences (CzechGlobe). UAK will lead equipment investment and deployment, while CzechGlobe contributes existing monitoring infrastructure (DendroNetwork). The project focuses on examining tree-level variables (such as DBH, height, and crown size), climate and site effects on growth, and developing predictive models using field, satellite, and climate data.

Key tasks include:

  • Establishing 20 IoT-equipped monitoring plots in Poland,

  • Integrating Polish and Czech monitoring networks,

  • Collecting ALS and TRW data for over 400 research plots,

  • Analyzing satellite and weather data (e.g., Sentinel-2, ERA5),

  • Developing growth prediction models for different climate change scenarios.

The project will span three years, with early tasks focused on data collection and setup, and later phases dedicated to model development, analysis, and simulations. The final outcome will be a real-time forest monitoring system with applications in precision forestry and climate resilience planning.
